When I first heard about Tiger Woods’ “sex scandal”, I wanted nothing more than for it to go away. Not because I felt bad for Tiger, rather I’ve long been weary of the media machine behind all the gossipy celebrity garbage. While I stayed away from a majority of the tabloid trash, I admittedly sought out and enjoyed South Park’s season premier that centred around Tiger’s affairs. From there, I witnessed his declaration that he would re-enter the world of golf, and from there the speculation and mockery continued. I first came across this commercial featuring Tiger for Nike, however I later found out that it was a parody. You’ll find the original commercial embedded above, while it features Earl Woods giving Tiger a cross between a stern talking to and a pep talk. It works, however the version that I originally spotted features audio pulled from one of Tiger’s infamous voice mails, where he begs one of his lady friends to change her answering machine message to something a little less suggestive. Call me a sucker, but for an instant I applauded Nike for taking such a controversial line with their goose who continuously lays golden eggs. While the official commercial is emotionally stirring, watching Tiger’s blank stare against the sound of his last attempt to keep his indiscretions a secret make him seem more human. It reminds us that nobody is perfect. Click play on the real commercial above, then check out this, our preferred version.
